Cock Tales the the Cocky Collective

Have you heard of #cockygate?  If you have, then you NEED to buy this book.  If you haven’t, well let me give you some details so you can go and buy this book!  It is only available for a limited time, so hurry!

There is a writer, I’ll use her initials, FH who writes a series of books about a family of brothers.  Each of her book titles has the word “cocky” in the title.  This isn’t anything odd, after all, there have been books before with that word in the title and to be honest, we’ve all called a man cocky at some point.  Well, FH took it a bit further and put in a trademark for the word.  The overworked trademark office let it go through (I hope it went through because they were overworked) and this writer began sending cease and desist letters to authors who wanted to use the word in their new books.  Hell, she even tried going after authors who had published BEFORE her trademark.

Amazon took books down that were upcoming with the word in their titles.  Authors began losing money – they had to stop their pre-sales and rebrand their books.  This isn’t a cheap thing to do!  The writing world has been in a tizzy over this for about a month.  But there are some other fun facts to know about.

  1. She trademarked the word in a specific font – she didn’t have the authority to do that per the creator of the font.
  2. She produced a rambling 2-hour video where she compared autism with stupidity.
  3. She states that her “fans” bought other books thinking they were her’s because it had ‘that word in the title.  Her fans were confused, and she lost money from their sales.  (Um, if they bought it and realized it wasn’t her they could have returned it.  Or better yet, read the freaking author name before you buy!)
  4. She claims the people who are in an uproar now are bullying her. (boo hoo)
  5. A retired lawyer and science fiction author decided to put forth a motion and court case to get the trademark reversed.  She is now suing him!
  6. She has claimed in her court documents that romance readers are unsophisticated and are easily distracted by the partial nudity on the book covers.  Hence, this is why they buy the wrong author’s books

I’m livid over all of this, and I’m not even a writer that is in the middle of this.  I’m not a  published author and most likely will never be.  But the very fact that another writer could try to squash creative expression because she wants to “own” a common word is beyond ludicrous.

Help support creative expression and buy a copy of Cock Tales.  This is an anthology of shorts from authors who have been impacted directly or want to help stop the lunacy from getting out of hand.  The money will go towards the fight against the lawsuits, and to assist the authors impacted recoup financially from their losses in this battle.

The book is only available until August 26th.  Buy Now!
